SA stars in action at the Olympics today

South Africa experienced a superb evening in the track and field at the London Olympic Games last night.

Eastern Cape Sprinter Anaso Jobodwana produced a fine performance in the 200m semi-final, finishing second behind world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica, with a personal best of 20.27 seconds.

The South African's time was the sixth fastest of the three heats with Bolt's time of 20.18 the fifth fastest - that final is at 5 to 10 SA time this evening.

South Africa's 110m hurdler Lehann Fourie qualified for the final where he clocked 13.53 to finish seventh in a race won by the American Aries Merrit.

South African decathlete Willem Coertzen was slightly off the pace, lying in 11th place with a score of 4142 at the close of the first day of the competition - he's back in action in the 110m hurdles just after 10 o'clock this morning.

Caster Semenya advanced to today's semi-final of the 800m race - crossing the line in second place in 2:00.71 - that final is at 20.38 this evening.

BMX racer Sifiso Nhlapo posted the second slowest time in the seeding run with the true competition only beginning today - just after 4pm.

Sunette Viljoen, the world number one in women's javelin, is a real South African medal prospect.
She says she's ready to throw over 70-metres which would surely mean gold - that final is at 10 o'clock this evening.

South Africa's Bridgitte Hartley contests the K1 500 metre canoe sprint final at a-quarter-past 11 this morning - very much a medal prospect.

The women's marathon 10-kilometre open water swim takes place on the Serpentine River at 1pm - featuring of course 19-year-old Jessica Roux of Port Elizabeth.
