South Africa's lone singles hope at the Australian Open Lloyd Harris bowed out in the second round at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.
The Dubai-based Harris is currently ranked 186 in the world and is playing on an injury-protected ranking after a wrist-injury scuppered his 2022 season.
He did not have an answer to Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, the world No 78, who won a tough four-setter 6-2 6-3 5-7 6-4 in three hours and five minutes.
Harris had set tongues wagging earlier in the week when he upset Italian 17th seed Lorenzo Musetti in a five-set epic in the first round.
Harris is not done at Melbourne Park just yet as he has teamed up in the doubles alongside compatriot Raven Klaasen.
Wednesday's action also saw the exit of defending men's champion Rafael Nadal in the second round.
The 22-time grand slam champion appeared to injure his left hip towards the end of the second set of his match against the American Mackenzie McDonald.
It most certainly impacted on his ability to move around the court and the Spaniard ultimately bowled out in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5
