Mdantsane-born boxer, Ludumo Lamati, is out of his induced coma and making steady progress in the neurological ward of a hospital in Northern Ireland.
He collapsed in the 12th round of his bout against WBC silver featherweight defending champion, Nick Ball, in Belfast in May.
Lamati’s Promoter, Larry Weinstein, said it was Lamati’s first loss after winning 22 fights in a row.
“In his career, Ludumo had never been counted or dropped, he walked [to his corner] and collapsed, with 40 seconds left on the clock.”
Weinstein said in spite of Lamati’s steady recovery, he still needed to have the difficult conversation with the 31-year-old, who has only ever known boxing.
Lamati suffered a head injury during his fight and as a result, his future in boxing may be uncertain, pending his full recovery.
Weinstein said he was hopeful that Lamati would recover and get back to his boxing career, but if that was not on the cards, there is a backup plan.
Lamati set up his own gym, Ringside Fitness, in the centre of Sandton about two months ago, which he is yet to launch. His girlfriend Chay Chadday, has been overseeing things in his absence.
Weinstein said regardless of what the future holds, Lamati would still have a future with Boxing5 promotions, helping to train fighters, and assisting with promotions.
Unsure of when Lamati can come back to South Africa, his mother, Joyce Thandi Lamati, and girlfriend, Chadday flew to Ireland to be by his side as he recovers.
