SA Rugby has announced a two-year suspension for EP rugby president, Maasdorp Cannon after he was earlier found guilty of contravening the SARU Constitution and Code of Conduct.
SARU said in a statement on Thursday that Cannon was suspended from holding any position or participating in any of its rugby structures.
He appeared before an independent judicial committee over the course of 14 months facing six charges relating to a speech he made in February last year.
SARU said in the speech, Cannon variously described SARU as being a racist organisation; its leadership as “selling-out” SARU; and that the Springbok was a racist emblem.
“The comments were subsequently published in social media and mainstream media.”
SARU said the three-person Judicial Committee ruled that Mr Cannon had clearly contravened their Constitution and Code of Conduct “with the intent to bring SARU into disrepute.
Cannon has 15 days in which to appeal the sentence if he so wishes.
