Rain halted playon Monday night on the first day of the US Open, delaying the start of 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer's opening match against Slovenia's Grega Zemlja at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Before the rain came down: 2nd seed Rafael Nadal took his 2013 hardcourt record to 16-0 as he swept into the second round with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over American wildcard Ryan Harrison.

There were also first round wins for 4th seed David Ferrer and 8th seed Richard Gasquet.

British qualifier Daniel Evans, the world number 179, stunned Japanese 11th seed Kei Nishikori, the biggest casualty of the opening day, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

In ladies play:

Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska eased past Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1, 6-2.

Britain's Laura Robson, the first British woman to be seeded at a major for 26 years, won nine games in succession to beat Spanish veteran Lourdes Dominguez Lino, 7-5, 6-0.

Defending champion Serena Williams and sister Venus both cruised into the second round with lopsided wins over Fransesca Schiavone and Kirsten Flipkens respectively.
