A career-best century from Rassie van der Dussen helped the Proteas to a 1-nil lead in their three-match One-Day International series against England, following a 62-run victory at the Riverside in Durham on Tuesday.
Van der Dussen struck 134 off 117 balls, including 10 fours, on a sweltering day in the English northeast, where the visitors put on a total of 333 for five in their 50 overs.
Aiden Markram, with 77, and Janneman Malan with a knock of 57 off 77 balls, played the supporting role.
Anrich Nortje was the pick of the Protas bowlers, with figures of four for 53, while spinners Markram took two for 25, Tabraiz Shamsi chipped in with two wickets, and stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj bagged one wicket for 42 runs.
Lungi Ngidi took one for 49 to leave the world champions all out for 271 in 46.5 overs.
The second match of the series takes place at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday.
