Proteas suffer humiliating loss in T20 series opener

Keshav Maharaj top scored for the Proteas with a knock of 41

CSA

Four ducks at the top of the order littered the Proteas scorecard as they slumped to an eight-wicket loss to India in the three-match T20 series on Wednesday.

Captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first, but the South Africans were blown away by the hosts at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, slipping to nine for five in the third over.

The Proteas recovered somewhat to post a total of 106 for eight.

However, the low total was easy for the Indians who eventually won comfortably with 20 balls to spare to take a 1-nil series lead.

Fit-again Bavuma was the first of four ducks after he was cleaned up by Deepak Chahar, who also accounted for Tristan Stubbs (0) in his second over.  The others who failed to post a score were Rilee Rossouw and David Miller.

The batsmen who put up some sort of resistance were Aiden Markram (25), Wayne Parnell (24), and Keshav Maharaj (41).

The next two fixtures in the pre-World Cup warm-up series will be on Sunday at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati and on Tuesday, 4 October at Indore.
