Boks win but fall short in claiming the crown

The Springboks beat Argentina 38-21 in Durban but failed to make the points margin that would have seen them edge the All Blacks for the 2022 Castle Lager Rugby Championship crown.

New Zealand claimed the Championship by one point finishing, with 19 points to South Africa’s 18, after beating Australia 40-14 at Eden Park.

Speaking post-match on Supersport, Man of the Match, Jasper Wiese, had mixed feelings about the victory.

“It’s always tough playing these guys.  Luckily, we got the win, but just a bit disappointed that we did not get the margin,” he said.

Wiese said Argentina was tough and put up a “helluva” performance in Durban.

Bok legend Victor Matfield said it was a great championship for the Springboks.

Captain Siya Kolisi said, “we’ll never take the win for granted.”  He said our discipline let us down at times, but we knew they were not going to back down.

Reflecting on the 2022 Championship, Kolisi said the biggest issue for him was that the Boks created opportunities but did not capitalise on them.

“We couldn’t do the job but got the win for the people,” he said about the massive crowd that turned up at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Heritage Day.
