The Blitzboks and the Proteas flew the South African flag high at the weekend with notable victories both home and abroad.
To cap off a stellar weekend for South African sport, Momentum Proteas opening batter Lizelle Lee was named the ICC Women's One-Day International (ODI) Cricketer of the Year in the 2021 ICC Awards.
The right-hander smashed 632 runs in the 50-over format during 2021, averaging an impressive 90.28 in 11 games, with five half-centuries and an unbeaten ton as she helped South Africa to second in the ICC Women's ODI Rankings.
On Sunday night, Springbok Sevens playmaker Selvyn Davids scored an exceptional try after the full-time whistle to give the Blitzboks a 24-17 win over Argentina in the inaugural Malaga Sevens Cup Final.
The Blitzboks had to come from behind twice in the final as they racked up their 29th consecutive win, and their third consecutive title in this year’s World Sevens Series
Its actually five tournament victories in a row for the Blitzboks going back to last year which they concluded with back-to-back series wins in Canada.
As for the Proteas, they clinched a nail-biting four-run victory over India in the third and final one-day international at Newlands to whitewash the series 3-nil.
Deepak Chahar smashed a quick-fire 54 from 34 deliveries to bring his side to the brink of victory but the South African bowlers kept their nerve and bowled India out for 283 with four balls remaining, in pursuit of 288.
South Africa had earlier posted 287 on the back of a masterful 124 off 130 balls from Man of the match and series Quinton de Kock.
Coach Mark Boucher was delighted for 'Quinnie' and said having him in a relaxed frame of mind was 'massive' for South Africa now that he was a new dad - even if he had walked away from the Test arena.
