PE to host SA's richest half marathon


The richest half marathon in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon, was unveiled to on Wednesday night.

It will take place on the Port Elizabeth beachfront on Saturday the 15th of November and carry a prize fund of R350 000.

The event is the brainchild of two high profile figures in the local road running fraternity, Alan Taylor and Mike Mbambani, and has been made possible by the union of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Tourism and Lotto.

The route starts and finishes close to the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club, at Pollock Beach, with turning points at Kings Beach and Pine Lodge and consists of two laps.

The race winner will take home R35 000 in prize money and the second place finisher R20 000.

Third place is worth R12 000.

Mbambani is confident the event will attract the leading half marathon runners from across the continent.
