Nelson Mandela Bay’s Protea women’s cricketers Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp have been included by the International Cricket Council in its Teams of the Decade.
Their male counterparts Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers, and Imran Tahir have also made the list.
The players were identified and selected by the ICC’s specialist voting academy comprising prominent cricket journalists, broadcasters and former players from around the world.
Momentum Proteas captain Dane van Niekerk and her all-rounder team-mate Marizanne Kapp were selected in the Women’s ODI Team of the Decade.
Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket Graeme Smith said it is an incredible honour to have the Protea players selected in these teams.
He said it’s a massive feather in their caps and speaks about the immense contribution they have made to cricket not just domestically, but also on a global stage.
“We have seen the women’s game evolve at a rapid rate in the last three or four years,” he added. “Players like Dane and Marizanne have been at the forefront of that evolution and their recognition by the ICC is testament to their efforts.”
De Villiers was named in the ODI and T20 Team of the Decade, Tahir in the ODI Team of the Decade and Steyn in the Test Team of the Decade
