NMMU Madibaz beat Tukkies in Pretoria

There were important wins for the NMMU Madibaz, UCT and Maties in an enthralling penultimate round of Varsity Cup matches before the playoffs on Monday night, leaving the competition wide open heading into the final week of league action.

Defending champions, Tuks suffered their second consecutive defeat at home, as the Port Elizabeth-based Madibaz ground out a crucial 19-9 win in the wet which saw them move past the Pretoria side into third place on the standings.

The NWU-Pukke maintained their position at the top of the Varsity Cup standings, after a hard-fought 16-8 win over Wits in wet conditions in Potchefstroom.

The Ikey Tigers ran in four tries against UFS-Shimlas to move into second place with a 25-5 win - their first at home this season.

Tuks are now level on log points with three-time champions, Maties who ended UJ's hopes of making the semi-finals this season, with a comfortable 24-8 victory.
