IRONMAN announced on Thursday that it will add a brand-new event to its 2022 race calendar with the IRONMAN® 70.3® Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa.
The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay triathlon will take place on Sunday, 3 April next year alongside the full distance IRONMAN African Championship.
General Registration will open on Wednesday, 24 November.
"Nelson Mandela Bay has always been the home of IRONMAN in South Africa, and we are delighted to be adding an IRONMAN 70.3 event which will take place on the same day as the IRONMAN African Championship," said IRONMAN South Africa MD Keith Bowler.
"After recently announcing the addition of IRONMAN 70.3 Mossel Bay to our 2022 race calendar, this announcement further broadens our event offerings in South Africa. We have a strong relationship with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and are excited to add a new event to our great partnership."
IRONMAN 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay will be an age-group race and will offer qualifying slots to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
IRONMAN has meanwhile confirmed that IRONMAN South Africa 70.3 Buffalo City is off the table in 2022 because of infrastructural challenges. However, talks with the Buffalo City Municipality are ongoing and it has NOT been replaced by the new 70.3 event in Nelson Mandela Bay.
