Momentum Proteas stun England at Women's World Cup

Marizanne Kapp celebrates her maiden ODI 5-wicket haul

Cricket South Africa

The Momentum Proteas beat England by three wickets at the Bay Oval in Tauranga on Monday to make it three wins out of three at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup.

It was sweet revenge for South Africa after their painful loss to England in the semi-finals of the previous World Cup and also consigned the reigning champions to their third straight loss.

England batted first and made 235 for 9 in their 50 overs, to which South Africa replied with 236 for 7 in 49.2 overs.

Gqeberha's Marizanne Kapp was named Player of the Match after taking career best figures of 5 for 45 in her ten overs and then scoring a vital 32 runs with the bat.

Kapp said she drew from lessons learned previously against England with her death bowling and was just happy that her team had been able to get across the line this time.

The Momentum Proteas are now up to second on the log, only behind Australia on net run-rate who are also the only other unbeaten team left in the tournament.

England now face the very real prospect of an early plane ride home - not what they had envisaged as the title holders.
