Mixed day for SA at World Matchplay champs


It was a day of mixed success for South Africa in the first round of the Accenture World Matchplay Championships in Arizona.

Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Ernie Els and George Coetzee all lost.

Louis Oosthuizen, Richard Sterne and Tim Clarke survived.

Russell Henley beat Schwartzel 1up, Robert Garrigus thumped Grace 4 and 3 and Freddie Jacobsen edged Ernie 1up.

George Coetzee lost 2 and 1 to Martin Kaymer.

Oosthuizen advanced 2 and 1 over Richie Ramsay and Sterne beat Jason Duffner 1up.
Tim Clarke was a 2 and 1 winner over Adam Scott.

The two top seeds are also out.

Rory McIlroy lost one-down to Shane Lowry and Tiger Woods was beaten 2 and 1 by Charles Howell III
