Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has announced that the government will no longer finance trips for sports super fans.
McKenzie took to his X profile to make this announcement, just two weeks away from the Olympic Games which are to be held in Paris from the 26th of July to the 11th of August.
"There are athletes and artists who are are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions, how do we justify paying for fans?" he wrote in his post.
McKenzie added that the department will no longer be paying for these trips and the money will be used where it is needed the most.
I have stopped all trips for super fans, we have athletes & artist who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions, how do we justify paying for fans? We shall no longer be paying for these trips and will use that money where it’s needed the most.

Following this statement, X-users threw jabs at Mama Joy, who has been the talking point since the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Some users where against the cancellation of trips, saying that she has dedicated her life to promoting South African sports.
One X-user said: " For many, Mama Joy represents more than just a cheerleader; she symbolizes our dreams and our unity. She carries the hope and spirit of millions who are unable to be physically present but support our teams with all their hearts."
I honestly don't support Minister Gayton McKenzie's decision to cancel trips for our super fans. Mama Joy and others like her serve as brand ambassadors for South Africa. Their presence at international events is invaluable, not just for the players, but for us back home as well.… pic.twitter.com/Qe17lLyLRt
