Kvitova into last eight in Dubai

Former Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova eased her into the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Open yesterday with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Ana Ivanovic.

It sets her up with a last eight match against Agnieszka Radwanska, the defending champion.

Radwanska had to work hard to get past Yulia Putintseva, an 18-year-old wild card player from Kazakhstan, 7-5 6-3.

Both players title hopes were boosted after the withdrawal of world number one Serena Williams with a back injury and top-seeded Victoria Azarenka with a heel injury.

In the States: Australia's Lleyton Hewitt saved two match points to advance while Swedish defending women's champion Sofia Arvidsson was ousted at the ATP and WTA US Indoor Championships in Memphis.

Former World No. 1 Hewitt saved two match points on his serve in the 12th game of the second set before defeating South Korean Lu Yen-Hsun 2-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in a first-round match.

31-year-old Hewitt is making his third appearance at the $1.58 million hardcourt event.

New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, who lost to Arvidsson in last year's Memphis final, avenged that defeat by defeating the second
seed 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, in a second-round match.
