Kevin Paul wins gold in Canada.

The South African swimming team continued to shine, adding gold and another African Record to their tally, on the third day of the IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada on Wednesday.

Port Elizabeth paralympian Kevin Paul’s golden time of 1:05.85 saw him claim the top spot and gold medal in the SB9 100m breaststroke race, over a second ahead of his competitors. The silver medal went to China’s Lin Furong in 1:07.68, with the bronze going to Russia’s Pavel Poltavtsev in 1:08.39.

According to Paul's coach, Brian Elliot, the NMMU law student could have gone even quicker had they got to Canada earlier.

He says Paul was heading for a world record after 80 metres but the last 15 got the better of him.

Paul won Paralympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and silver in London last year.

Beth Nothling took 0.34secs off her own 2010 African Record in the S5 50m backstroke event when she concluded the race in 6th place with a time of 52.22.
