Steven Sawyer: WSL / MATT DUNBAR
Teams of top-class longboard surfers from around the country will take to the waves of Jeffrey’s Bay this month as the Kouga Municipality prepares to host the SA Longboarding Championships for the first time in 12 years.
The 31st annual SA Longboard Championships, sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and presented by RYD, is set to take place at Lower Point in Jeffrey’s Bay from 24-29 August.
The event will consist of male and female surfers from the under-14 age category up to the over-70 legends division.
Jeffrey’s Bay local and 2018 World Surf League (WSL) World Longboard Champion Steven Sawyer has confirmed his participation.
Four wildcards will be added to the event this year, making it all the more competitive.
Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks says the event will be of great economic value to the area as it will bring visitors and much-needed tourism to Jeffrey’s Bay.
Earlier this month, the WSL announced that after a two-year absence because of the coronavirus pandemic, famed Supertubes at Jeffrey’s Bay was back on its roster of venues for its elite Championship Tour in 2022.
Supertubes will host the world’s top male and female surfers from July 9-18 next year as stop nine of ten on the 2022 WSL Championship Tour schedule.
