Jeffreys Bay surfer, Matthew McGillivray, is one of four athletes who have been added to the list of surfers who have provisionally qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Olympics.com reports that McGillivray and Australian, Jack Robinson, earned quota spots through their World Surf League 2023 season's ranking.
Both had been competing in the Tahiti Pro, where the round of 16 ended on Tuesday, and their performances ensured they secured the points needed to finish as the top two athletes from their countries at the end of the year.
“If included on the national delegations for Paris 2024, it would be the first Olympic appearance for the two surfers,” the website reported.
“Australia, South Africa, and Japan are now eligible to have at least two male surfers competing on the Teahupo'o wave (Tahiti) during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while Mexico is due to be represented at an Olympic surfing competition for the first time.”
The other South Africans who have already qualified for the Olympic Games are Jordie Smith and Bianca Beytendag.
