J'Bay surfer's dream call-up to world champs


 Local Eastern Cape surfer, Emma Smith, is in Santa Catarina, Brazil, after receiving a late call-up for the ASP World Junior Surfing Championships.

The Billabong team rider earned her invitation when the governing body ASP announced that an extra spot had opened up for another female surfer from Africa.

Surfing South Africa duly nominated Smith as the top local u20 female surfer on the World Rankings who had not already qualified.

The Springbok surfer joins the powerful Africa squad consisting of Diran Zakarian, Slade Prestwich, Jeffrey's Bay counter part Dylan Lightfoot, David van Zyl, Michael February and Bianca Buitendag from Vic Bay.

The junior world champs runs from the 27th of October ot the 5th of November at Joaquina Beach, where the South Africans will take on their peers from the other six ASP regions - North and South America, Europe, Australasia, Hawaii and Japan.
