Ironman South Africa sold out

For the first time in its history, IRONMAN South Africa has sold out. On the eve of its 10th anniversary edition, IRONMAN South Africa reached this milestone which is testimony to the ever growing popularity of the only IRONMAN on African soil filling the 2000 available slots in only six months after opening registrations.

The race is renowned for fast times, friendly locals and unparalleled spectator support making it one of the most sought after international IRONMAN destinations.

“It certainly gives us immense pleasure in announcing that IRONMAN South Africa is sold out on the eve of its 10th anniversary. Over the past nine years we have strived to deliver a world class race experience to our athletes putting on an event that both the city of Nelson Mandela Bay and South Africa can be proud of. Ten years ago we had the dream to bring IRONMAN back to South Africa. Today we stand proud at how the event has grown, what it now means to the city and what it has done for the sport of triathlon in South Africa,” said Keith Bowler, managing director of World Endurance Africa Holdings.

The 3.8km swim, 180.2km cycle and 42.2km run – all to be completed consecutively within 17 hours - makes up what many deem the toughest one-day endurance event in the world. Athletes complete a two-looped swim off Hobie Beach in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean before heading out on the three-looped cycle initially taking athletes along the coast, heading uphill into the city before taking in some breathtaking views of the unspoilt Port Elizabeth coastline heading back to transition.

“The year 2014 was always going to be a watershed moment in the history of this great event but to have reached sold out status this far ahead of the race speaks volumes for how it has grown in stature,” says Paul Wolff, IRONMAN South Africa race director.

The 10th anniversary edition of IRONMAN South Africa promises to be an unforgettable event for athletes and spectators alike. A limited number of IRONMAN 4 the Kidz charity slots are available for athletes who still wish to be part of the 10-Year Anniversary celebrations in April next year.
