Indian batsman Virat Kholi scored his 49th one-day international centuries to equal that of the great Sachin Tendulkar, as the hosts thrashed South Africa by 243 runs on Sunday.
Kholi’s century was supported by bowler Ravindra Jadeja who took five wickets for just 33 runs as South Africa was skittled out for 83 runs at Eden Gardens in Kolkota.
Supersport.com reports that the score matched South Africa’s lowest total in ODIs and the heaviest defeat since the 182-run loss to Pakistan in 2002 at St George’s Park.
India won the toss and chose to bat, setting a total of 326 for 5 in their 50 overs.
Kholi, who celebrated his 35th birthday, scored 101 off 121 deliveries, supported by Shreyas Iyer who made 77 off 87 balls. Captain Rohit Sharma made 40 runs.
The South Africa bowlers took a pasting with Marco Jansen taking one wicket for 94 runs, with Tabraiz Shamsi returning figures of 1/72 as the Indian batters bullied the Proteas bowlers.
The Proteas put up little resistance, with the pick of the batsmen Marco Jansen with 14, Rassie van der Dussen made 13, and captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller on 11 the only batsmen in double figures.
South Africa has already qualified for the semi-finals, despite the heavy loss and their final game of the tournament will be against Afghanistan next Friday.
