Hosts Sri Lanka to open World Twenty20

Hosts Sri Lanka open cricket's World Twenty20 against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, kicking off the country's biggest ever sports event.

Mahela Jayawardene's men will take the field in Hambantota, with hopes high they can end a 16-year wait for their second global title in front of their cricket-obsessed fans.

Play starts at 3.30 pm SA time.

The Proteas play their opener against Zimbabwe at the same venue on Thursday.

They beat New Zealand by nine-runs in a warm-up match in Colombo on Monday.

After making 186 for 6 in their 20 overs, led by a half century from skipper AB de Villiers, the Proteas restricted the Black Caps to 177 for 8 as Dale Steyn picked up three wickets in one over, returning figures of 4 for 25.
