Former Warriors captain retires

Former Chevrolet Warriors captain Davy Jacobs has announced his retirement from first class cricket and one day cricket.

He says a myriad of injuries and surgeries in recent years has taken his toll and that he's decided not to sign another contract with the Warriors.

While he's hoping to still play some T-20 cricket in the UK,  the 32 year-old wicket keeper/batsmen says ankle and thumb surgery last year were the final straw.

"I just feel the time is right.  I've been fighting all the surgeries and rehab over the last couple of years.  I definitely overtrained when I was younger and literally broke my body to basically get to where I am today.  So there's no regrets about that, I gave it a full go and I just feel if your hearts not in it anymore you gotta move on," Jacob said.

"I've never just been able to play, I had to be inspired to play and just the fire's gone for this.  It's just the one day cricket and four day cricket.  I'm still open to play T-20 cricket," he added.

Chevrolet Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa has heaped praise on Jacobs saying he had made an indelible impact on the franchise and players in the eight years that he was at St Georges Park.

Jacobs led the Warriors to two trophies in 2010/2011, saying they would always remain career highlights along with playing alongside Sachin Tendulkar for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
