England on the brink at World Cup

Luis Suarez emerged from a month of treatment to his injured knee to score both goals as Uruguay beat England 2-1 in Group D, to keep his team's Soccer World Cup hopes alive and leave England's hanging by a thread in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

The victory resurrected Uruguay's last 16 hopes following the 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica in their Group D opener.

England, for whom Wayne Rooney scored his first World Cup goal, are now on the brink of World Cup elimination with two defeats out of two.

Meanwhile, another superb performance by playmaker James Rodriguez, who scored one goal and created the other, inspired Colombia to a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in their World Cup Group C match.

In Thursday's third match, Greece, reduced to 10 men, held on for a 0-0 draw with Japan that keeps both alive in Group C, and sends rival Colombia into the last 16 of the World Cup.
