The Zigzag Durban Surf Pro, set to take place from Friday through to Sunday, has been cancelled due to a sewage leak at the Durban Harbour.
World Surf League Africa Operations manager Colin Fitch says the extent of the contamination poses a serious health risk and a threat to the marine life alongside the marina and along the beachfront.
He says the decision was taken to cancel the event for the safety of the surfers and event staff.
Fitch says it was not an easy call to make and they did consider many alternatives.
The City Surf Series organisers are looking to add another event to the 2019 calendar to ensure that the surfers do not miss out on the opportunity to earn valuable World Ranking points.
The next event, the Vans Surf Pro Classic, will take place from 31 May to 2 June in Lambert's Bay.
The Zigzag Durban Surf Pro would have been the 4th stop of eight on the 2019 WSL Africa Tour and the third CSS event of the year.
