The number one tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic is top trending all over social media following Wednesday's shock announcement that authorities would not grant him a Visa to enter Australia in order to compete in the year's first grand slam in Melbourne.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison cancelled the defending champion's Visa stating on Twitter that rules are rules, especially when it comes to their borders.
"Our strong border policies have been critical to Australia having one of the lowest death rates in the world from COVID, we are continuing to be vigilant," he said.
Djokovic announced on Tuesday that he was going to play in the Australian Open after he was granted a medical exemption.
The tournament requires all players and fans to be vaccinated in order to be part of the first Grand Slam of the year set to start on the 17th of January.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, however, insisted that Djokovic never had the required exemption to enter the country and he now faces deportation.
Mr Djokovic’s visa has been cancelled. Rules are rules, especially when it comes to our borders. No one is above these rules. Our strong border policies have been critical to Australia having one of the lowest death rates in the world from COVID, we are continuing to be vigilant.
