CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA has congratulated the Border Cricket Board on its success in winning the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge.
They beat Free State in the Final at Chevrolet Park on Saturday by three wickets with nearly five overs to spare.
“This is a tremendous triumph for Border Cricket,” commented CSA Acting CEO Jacques Faul, “not just because they won an important competition but they have also been one of the leading CSA affiliates in promoting the cause of the Africanisation of our cricket.
“Eight African players have turned out for Border in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge this season and there were five in the victorious team in Saturday’s Final. It says a great deal for the work that president Chris Nenzani, CEO Themba Lupuwana and the rest of their team are doing in actively transforming our cricket. That applies also to Mfuneko Ngam who is doing wonderful work at the University of Fort Hare Academy.
“Under his leadership Fort Hare have become a major force in our Tertiary Institutions’ cricket and did outstandingly well at the most recent USSA Week.
“One of the players to have come out of Border over the past two seasons is Ayabulela Gqamane, who played in the Final and has established himself at franchise level. He is currently top of the Sunfoil Series bowling averages with 20 wickets in only three matches at an average of 10.75.
“Border were unbeaten in the coastal section, which included the likes of Western Province, Eastern Province and KwaZulu-Natal, and finished top to qualify for the final in spite of having two of their matches washed out.
“They are deserving winners and their success is a very encouraging development for South African cricket,” Faul concluded.
