The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has agreed to the in-principal relocation of Chippa United from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for the 2014/15 PSL season and beyond.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chippa Ngcolomba announced at City Hall on Thursday that all outstanding details regarding the arrangement with Chippa United would be announced shortly.
He said it had been resolved at council level in September last year to support the move of Maritzburg United to the Metro but that the Club had declined this relocation offer on the 19th of June.
Ngcolomba says the Metro had then targetted Chippa United and that the hope now was for them to become the team of the people of Port Elizabeth.
Riaan Olberholzer, CEO of Axxess Management which operates the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, said the relocation was cheap at the price, compared to the upwards of 80 million rand needed to buy a psl team, or to buy matches.
He said relocating a team was the only viable business model and that the idea was for Chippa United to play all its home matches at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
