Chiefs miss a trick in Polokwane

Kaizer Chiefs gave away an opportunity to climb further clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United in pouring rain in Polokwane.

Nonetheless, with second-placed Orlando Pirates, who hold a game in hand, settling for a 1-1 stalemate with AmaZulu in Durban, Chiefs retained their seven-point lead atop the standings.

Basement club Chippa United lost more ground in their battle to avoid Premiership relegation when they went down 2-1 to Golden Arrows at the Philippi Stadium.

University of Pretoria and Bloemfontein Celtic drew 1-1 at Tuks Stadium.

In Europe: Real Madrid all but secured their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League last night with a 3-0 defeat of Galatasaray in their quarter-final first leg.

Jose Mourinho's side were just too strong for the Turkish league leaders, opening the scoring through Cristiano Ronaldo in the ninth minute and never looking back on a wet night at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema doubles Real's lead just before the half-hour mark. Gonzalo Higuain put the seal on the game in the 73rd minute.

Meanwhile, Malaga's tie with Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund remains on a knife-edge after the teams drew 0-0 at La
Rosaleda.
