Border women make rugby history

The Border Women's rugby team earned their place in history on Saturday by lifting the Women's Interprovincial trophy for the first time since the competition's inception in 2003.

The team registered an emphatic 41-8 victory against defending champions Western Province at the Buffalo City Municipal Stadium in East London.

So dominant was the East London team they racked up an impressive seven tries, while allowing Western Province to cross their tryline only once.

Griquas defeated the Limpopo Blue Bulls 39-20 to win the B Division final.

IN the Absa Currie Cup:

The Golden Lions were able to take a full house of five points from their Currie Cup match against the Blue Bulls at Ellis Park yesterday, beating their Gauteng rivals 35-26.

The Blue Bulls were thoroughly outplayed but did manage to take a bonus point out of the game as they scored four tries, two in the last seven minutes.

Earlier: A brace of tries by Springbok winger Lwazi Mvovo helped the Sharks charge to the top of the Currie Cup table with a convincing 50-26 bonus-point victory over the Free State Cheetahs at Kings Park in Durban.

The EP Kings, SWD Eagles and Leopards all booked their semifinal berths in the Absa Currie Cup First Division alongside log-leaders, the Pumas, with one pool round remaining.

In a decisive weekend, the EP Kings took a step closer to securing the remaining home semifinal with a 30-23 victory against the Valke in Port Elizabeth, while the SWD Eagles thumped the Griffons 51-28 in Welkom.

The Leopards cemented their semifinal spot despite going down 22-26 against the Border Bulldogs in Potchefstroom as the Boland Cavaliers were knocked out of the running following their 44-21 defeat against the Pumas in Nelspruit.
The Pumas are guaranteed the other home semifinal.

With one round remaining the third-placed Eagles and fourth-placed Leopards could switch positions on the log depending on their results next week.
