Border amateurs win one-day title

PHAPHAMA FOJELA and Lundi Mbane took four wickets each as Border swept to the CSA Provincial 50-Over Challenge trophy with a five-wicket victory over Free State in the final at Chevrolet Park in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

The two fast bowlers took combined figures of 8 for 44, as they tore through the Free State line-up to dismiss them for just 110 in 32.3 overs.

Although Border lost Somila Seyibokwe to the first ball of their reply, they soon recovered and even an inspired spell of 3 for 15 from Patrick Botha could not stop them from achieving their target in 34.2 overs.

Within 13 overs, Free State had fallen to 47 for six and the match was effectively over as a contest.

While Fojela's opening spell yielded two for 13 from four overs, Mbane was even quicker out of the blocks as he started with two wicket maidens and grabbed another scalp in his next over.
Fojela (4 for 29) picked up two more wickets in his next spell, including that of top scorer Shadley van Schalkwyk (25), before Mbane (4 for 15) returned to polish off the innings by bowling Corne Dry for 15.

After a disastrous start to the chase, Martin Walters provided the stability required as he scored 41 from 92 balls from No. 3, while Marco Marais added some entertainment by hitting three sixes in an unbeaten 25 from 19 balls.
