The Springboks broke their Australian hoodoo, recording their first victory since 2013 with a dominant performance in a feisty second test at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday.
South Africa ran in four tries to one to earn a bonus point 24 – 8 victory, after going into the half-time break leading 12-3.
Damien de Allende scored the opening try for the Springboks after sustained pressure in the opening period, with Damien Willemse, slotting the conversion.
The Boks' second try came from 19-year-old Canan Moodie, who plucked a high ball out of the sky to race to the try line, with South Africa’s second youngest debutant scoring his first international try.
Franco Mostert opened the scoring with a fluid team try early in the second half, with Makazole Mapimpi getting just rewards for last week with the Boks’ fourth try, beating Marike Koriebete this time to the line.
However, Mapimpi was yellow carded for his reaction to the Wallaby after scoring, which also sparked a bout of pushing and shoving highlighting the feisty nature of the test.
The evergreen Frans Steyn slotted the conversion.
Man of the Match Damien Willemse said it was a great win, adding that it was a “collective effort” to prepare him for the Number 10 role as a replacement for Handre Pollard and Elton Jantjies.
Debutant Canan Moodie said it was a “nerve-wracking” build-up to the match for him but “getting my first cap and scoring my first try was very special.”
In his post-match interview, Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi said it was a tough build-up after last week’s loss, but he said he was grateful for the win.
“The boys stood up,” he said.
The Wallabies scored a penalty with the only try coming from Pete Samu which went unconverted.
The Springboks next face the Pumas in Argentina on 17 September, before returning to Durban for the return clash on 24 September.
