Bok coaches delay team announcement for French quarter-final clash

SA rugby coaches still contemplating squad for quarter-final clash against France.

Springbok Director Rugby Rassie Erasmus and Head Coach Jacques Nienaber said the squad to face World Cup Rugby hosts France in Sunday's quarter-final clash, will only be announced on Friday.

Team announcements are traditionally done about five days before the match, but the two are leaving the announcement quite late, reportedly because they are undecided about the team.

"We’ve been mixing and matching for the last year to make sure we have players on par with one another in each position, so we’ll keep our options open for a seven-one, six-two and five-three split," Erasmus said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said the coaches will meet on Wednesday and confirm things, and then the players will slot in.

"The way the French team looks could also influence what selection we decide on. The one thing for certain is that we have the right bunch of players here," he added.

According to Rassie Erasmus, they are considering all options with seven, six, or five forwards on the bench.

Meanwhile, French scrum half and captain Antoine Dupont has reportedly been in training after being cleared to play on Monday by French rugby's medical director Bruno Boussagol.

The 26-year-old scrumhalf had surgery on a fractured cheekbone last month but will be able to take part in contact sessions in the build-up to Sunday's last-eight tie with holders South Africa.

Boussagol was quoted as saying that the halfback has been considering wearing a scrum cap for this weekend's game and has already tried that type of protection.
