Big wins for Serena and Murray at Wimbledon


Serena Williams produced a champion's display to knock out title-holder Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon yesterday as Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber joined her in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
 
Chasing a fifth Wimbledon crown, Williams beat Kvitova 6-3, 7-5 to set up a semi-final showdown with Aussie Open Champion Azarenka.

The Belarusian second seed reached the last four for the second successive year with a 6-3, 7-6 win over unseeded Austrian Tamira Paszek.

Kerber emerged victorious in the all-German quarter-final with Sabine Lisicki - winning  6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 7-5 to notch a tour-leading 45th win of the year.

Kerber next faces third seed Radwanska, who became Poland's first Grand Slam semi-finalist in the Open Era with her 7 5 4 6 7 5 win over  Russian 17th seed Maria Kirilenko 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

In men's play;  Andy Murray completed his last-16 win over Marin Cilic in straight sets, in a match held over from Monday because of rain.

In today's quarter-finals, Murray will play Spain's David Ferrer who sent  Juan Martin del Potro packing  6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

Also making today's last eight were Florian Mayer and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Mayer beat Richard Gasquet of France in four sets and Kohlschreiber reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the 33rd attempt with a  straight sets win over American qualifier Brian Baker.

French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the quarter-finals for the third successive year - beating American 10th seed Mardy Fish 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-4. - He'll play Kohlschreiber in the last eight.
