South Africa's Louzanne Coetzee has become the latest to taste victory in Tokyo after winning a 1500m Paralympic silver.
Team SA now has three medals.
The 28-year-old won 4min 40.96sec in the women’s T11 final, finishing second behind Mexico’s Monica Rodriguez Saavedra, who broke the world record in taking gold in 4:37.40.
Coetzee went even faster on Monday morning, stopping the clock in a new African record 4:40.96, only two seconds off the old world record.
On Saturday, 19-year-old long-jumper Ntando Mahlangu and 400m runner Anrune Weyers earned two gold medals.
Mahlangu has set a new world record with a jump of 7.17 metres, breaking Leon Schaefer's record of 7.12 from Germany, while Weyers won Team SA's first gold medal for her 400m T45 final in a time of 56.05.
Reigning Paralympic 400m champion (T38), Dyan Buis won his heat in a season's best 51.29sec last night to qualify for the finals.
Meanwhile, back at home, the Paralympics are expected to score big. This, after Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, announced an incentive of R450 000 for each gold Olympics or Paralympic medalist, while their coaches would receive R120 000.
