All set for PE girls cricket festival

Framesby High School, in conjunction with Eastern Province Cricket, will be hosting the Sassy 6's School Girl 6-a-side Cricket Festival on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October 2013.

The aim of the event is to expose girls that are currently playing in the school girl's league, to coaching (which is often poor or non-existent due to a lack of funding available to girl's cricket) as well as competitive matches. Although, the matches will be the shortened form of the game, it will allow the new girls to see the standard of play as well as give talent scouts an opportunity to search for new talent.

The event was started last year by Gerry Smith, Chairman of Girl's Cricket, who serves on the Eastern Province Youth Cricket Board and who has been loyally dedicated to women's cricket since 1994. Her experience ranges from fixturing and organizing the high school girl's league to having managed the Eastern Province u/19 and Women's teams. This former South African Women's Convenor of Selectors has now turned her focus to the development and upliftment of girl's cricket.

Along with the experience of Gerry Smith, South African Women's Cricket players, Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk will also be sharing their playing experience with the young aspiring cricketers.

Claire Terblanche, the Eastern Province u/19 Girl's Coach, will be heading up the coaching session that will be held on the Friday morning. She will be assisted by the Eastern Province Women's team.

The focus of the coaching session will be to cover the basics of fielding, batting and bowling. Many girls are often not exposed to the technical aspects required for the game. The coaching clinic will also serve as a coach's clinic where the school coaches present will also be introduced to various drills that they can do with their teams.

Following the coaching session, teams will be split into two groups in a strength versus strength format. Matches will be played up until lunch time on Saturday and will be followed by a prize giving.

The teams taking part are as follows:

Linkside, Framesby, Strelitzia, DF Malherbe, Pearson, Bethelsdorp, St Thomas, Chatty, Mfesane, Cowan
