This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 1st Grey High 1st Xv rugby festival, held for the first time in 1989. The festival has not run annually as on several occasions the Grey has supported special anniversary festivals of like-minded schools, such as Maritzburg College's 150th last year.
This year the festival will see 26 first teams in action, with added spice through the inclusion of two international touring teams, la Plata from Buenos Aires in Argentina and the highly rated Windhoek Gymnasium from Namibia.
The hosts Grey High will play on all three days, their opponents this year being Kearsney College, Nico Malan and Michaelhouse. There are also another 14 junior teams in action as part of the festival, which makes it the largest of its kind in the republic with a total of 40 teams playing what many view as the purest form of the sport - schoolboy rugby.
