A second KICK Early Childhood Development Centre in the Gqebera (Walmer) Township will be built following a donation of R40 000 from Algoa FM. The cheque was handed over personally by management and staff.
“With this donation from Algoa FM, we now have a portion of the funds needed to build another ECD Centre in Gqebera. Together with Zanethemba Foundation, KICK has already completed one, but the need is huge and now with the new building we will be able to accommodate more little ones. At present The Ikamva ECD centre (Early Childhood Development Centre) accommodates 38 little ones”, says KICK Co-founder, Lauren Stretch.
It is estimated that around 40 per cent of young children in South Africa have not mastered the foundational concepts of learning required before going to school.
“By partnering with EARLY INSPIRATION, which is now training people in the area to be teachers, we are empowering even more people in this community while educating their children. We are proud of the long term positive impact this project will have on the entire community”, says KICK Director, Duncan Heuer.
“When we arrived at KICK a group of happy, funny and loving little people surrounded us immediately; hugging, singing and inviting us to play with them. Despite the obvious challenges of poverty in Gqebera, we were surprised by how these children were probably amongst the brightest faces we have ever seen”, says Marketing Manager of Algoa FM, Toinette Koumpan.
“After seeing the joy on those little faces, we didn’t need much convincing that KICK is doing amazing work in that community and we are humbled by the fact that we were are in a position to make this donation to KICK”, Financial Director of Algoa FM, Kevin Reed.
