Algoa FM afternoon drive show co-host Roch-Lè Bloem is about to fly solo to host the weekday mid-morning show between nine and noon.
She has been co-hosting The Drive with Roland Gaspar for close-on three years.
"I'm looking forward to being a part of the daily morning conversation. Although there’ll be lots of music, fun and that ‘Roch Spice,’ I'd really like to bring more than just chit-chat to the audience of the show,” she says.
“Post the big pandemic and with all the challenges we have faced, I feel like it's time to change the narrative. It's time to shine, to conquer, to walk and live in our power.”
Bloem replaces radio all-rounder Mio Khondleka, who has just been appointed as the new programme manager at Algoa FM. This follows the departure of Baydu Adams who took a decision to return to Cape Town after a nine-year stint with the station.
“It is a great opportunity to work with and lead a wonderful team, most of whom have been on-air colleagues and champions. These are exciting times,” he says.
Khondleka, who returned to Algoa FM with his wife Queenie nine years ago, was first appointed programme manager in 2012.
In 2013, Mio and Queenie were a part of the team which launched Power FM in Johannesburg, but the call of the Eastern Cape was far too strong, and they returned to the station as the only husband and wife team on air in South Africa.
Listeners will still be able to catch him on air on Saturday mornings between six and nine as he presents Saturday Breakfast.
“Mio’s industry knowledge and consistent work ethic has earned him a lot of respect among peers, colleagues and management alike. His appointment is both strategic and fortuitous as we continue to shape the future of our media brand,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.
“He brings a unique set of broadcast content and talent management skills to our on-air team and we’re excited to be working with him in his new capacity,” adds Jay.
Bloem’s move to the mid-morning slot on Monday 10 October, completes the refresh to Algoa FM’s presenter line-up.
Recently, the station announced that Vinny Nogemane is anchoring the Afternoon Drive show in Buffalo City and that Liaquat Sain had taken over the 10 pm to 2 am show during weekdays. On Saturdays, Jean-Pierre (JP) Botha is presenting the Algoa FM Top 30; Craig Ross is hosting the Saturday afternoon show between three and seven; Annelu le Roux is on air from 7 to 10 pm, and Mandisa Magwaxaza brings Saturday to a close from 10 pm until two on Sunday mornings.
