A Rio Carnival theme has been chosen for this year’s annual Algoa Cares Summer Charity Golf Day, which will take place on Thursday, March 6 at the Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth.
Masifunde Learner Development is the charity chosen as the beneficiary for this year’s golf day.
The organisation currently trains motivated and talented learners to become change makers in their communities through a life-skills training programme called Learn4Life. In addition to that, Masifunde Learner Development sponsors 46 learners – starting from Grade R to matriculation with high quality education at former model-C schools outside Walmer Township. To ensure full integration all costs – school fees, uniforms, books, outings plus transport – are covered by Masifunde.
Masifunde Learner Development was granted permission by Walmer High School to manage and make use of its school library last year, and is raising funds to purchase new textbooks and reference books for the over 1,500 students using the facility. Uthombo Wolwazi is the only library in Walmer Township.
“Education continues to be a concern in this province with the Eastern Cape once again having the lowest matric pass rate. We hope that our support of this education focused beneficiary will emphasise the importance of coming together to make a big difference in this area. We want to put the spotlight on organisations like Masifunde who have sound plans on how to tackle this issue,” says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.
Masifunde Learner Development together with the support of German and local volunteers from NMMU help train and tutor the learners and have a Homework club running after school at the Youth Centre in Walmer Township to ensure that learners are given adequate support while being educated in the demanding academic environment of a Model-C school.
In addition, art, drama and swimming classes are provided to both Model-C sponsorship programme students and other learners in the township area who also show potential but still attend the Walmer Township School.
The format for the Rio Carnival golf day will be a “fourballbetterball”.
Algoa FM will be giving away R20 000 worth of airtime to the corporate team that goes the extra mile at their sponsored tee or green, according to marketing manager Toinette Koumpan.
Fourball bookings for the corporate day are initially allocated to companies which sponsor tees/ greens or specified areas. Thereafter, fourballs are allocated according to the value of prizes or prize money or donations.
