Queenie Grootboom, who’s been co-hosting Algoa FM’s lunch-time show with husband Mio Khondleka, will be flying solo from April the 1st, when she hosts the seven to ten pm show from Sunday to Friday evenings.
“The change of shift” show, as she calls it, is a familiar concept to her as she previously presented this show during 2012 and 2013.
Jeff Moloi, who currently presents the show, is leaving the station and so too is producer Monde Kapa, who also presented a Saturday evening show.
“While we are really sorry to see Jeff go, it is great to have Queenie back in the hot seat. Under her wing, the show enjoyed tremendous ratings and we have no doubt that she’ll once again take it to new heights,” says Algoa FM operations director Alfie Jay.
“The show is on air during an interesting time,” says Grootboom, “you are joined by people who are knocking off work, or people who are at the end of their daily run around, as well as shift workers on their way to report for duty – so in many ways – it is a drive-time and breakfast show all in one”.
Husband Mio says he sees the two shows as providing a bridge for listeners from lunch-time through to home-time. “It is great to see Queenie empowered with her own show again. Being partners in life, as well as on air, we will complement each other,” he says.
The lunch-time show will now have more music and allow for more interaction with listeners, he says.
Other on-air changes for Algoa FM include Siobhan Momberg, who currently presents the early weekday pre-DMB hour, moving from Sunday to Saturday evenings between seven and ten pm; and newly appointed Roch-Lè Bloem presenting the Saturday show from noon to three in the afternoon.
“Having new voices on air is always exciting. These changes to the line-up have been made in response to feedback from our listeners, and we are privileged to have such great talent available in the Eastern Cape to adapt to the changing preferences of the audience,” says Jay.
