Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality executive mayor Gary van Niekerk has signed a letter of intent with the deputy mayor of Zhuhai Municipal government in Guangdong Province in China.

He said on Tuesday that the agreement was meant to bring in millions in investments to 'upskill' the city through trade exchanges, collaborations between the two cities ports, and student exchanges through Nelson Mandela University.

The mayor exchanged signatures with Yang Chuan, the vice mayor of Zhuhai municipal government in the presence of the Chinese delegation and the Mayoral Committee members.

According to Van Niekerk, the agreement and interest to invest in South Africa, particularly Nelson Mandela Bay, was sparked by his recent visits to China with Premier Oscar Mabuyane.

During their time, they visited Harbin Electric Machinery Co. Ltd (HEC) - an equipment-producing company in China, Sagebot Intelligent Medical Equipment facility, where cutting-edge technology is advancing healthcare for hospitals and medical institutions worldwide, and Chint Group, a leader in electricity equipment and technology company.

The mayor said these visits all contributed to the relationship that was fostered.

"I am thrilled that we are embarking on this collaboration journey with Zhuhai. This partnership represents a significant step towards enhancing our international relations and creating opportunities for our communities. By working together, we can share knowledge, drive economic growth, and promote cultural understanding," says Van Niekerk.

He adds that job creation, economic ties, and the enhancement of trade and investment are at the core of the agreement.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently led the South African delegation to the Forum for China Africa Cooperation, which saw nearly all African leaders attending the summit in Beijing where numerous agreements were concluded between China and various African countries, including South Africa.

China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally, while South Africa is China's number one trading partner in Africa, with total bilateral trade growing from R614 billion in 2022 to R692 billion in 2023..
