The new multi-party coalition has now taken the first official step to unseat the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Eugene Johnson.

A notice for motions of no-confidence in Johnson, her deputy, Buyelwa Mafaya and the Council Chief Whip was handed to the Speaker's office on Thursday.

The notice was signed by the ACDP councillor, Lance Grootboom, and seconded by the Freedom Front Plus' Bill Harrington

The multi-party coalition made up of the DA, UDM, ACDP, African Independent Congress (AIC), the PAC, FF-Plus, and the Abantu Integrity Movement (AIM) have been vocal on its plans to oust the ANC-led administration in the hopes to take the city forward.

The coalition only forms 56 seats in council meaning they will need the support of other political parties for the motion to succeed.

Sixty-one votes will be needed for the removal of the executive and deputy mayor as well as the Council Chief Whip.

FFplus' Bill Harrington, says there has been an indication from other parties that they will support the motion in council.

"If one looks at the instability within the ANC, two weeks back 10 ward ANC councillors barged into the mayor's office demanding that their wards must receive service delivery. So, you will be surprised by who will support this motion," he added.

He says there are other political parties who do not form part of the coalition which have indicated that they will support the motion.

Meanwhile, the EFF has said in the past it would back up any party that wants to remove the ANC-led coalition.

EFF councillor, Khanya Ngqisha, says the coalition has not engaged the party on these particular motions yet.

Ngqisha says the EFF cannot support something that it is not aware of.

The coalition has asked for the motions to be tabled at the next council meeting.
