The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has officially gazetted the 1st of November as the election date.
Monday's publication in the Gazette followed this past weekend's voter registration drive by the Independent Electoral Commission.
Minister Dlamini Zuma has appealed to all South Africans to ensure that the elections are peaceful, trustworthy as well as free and fair.
The IEC's deadline for parties to register their candidates closes on Tuesday.
The public can still register online on the IEC website until midnight.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court has dismissed an application by the Democratic Alliance challenging the IEC's decision to reopen the candidate nomination process for the local government election.
In its judgment, the Constitutional Court found that the Electoral Commission's decision was not unconstitutional, unlawful or invalid.
The parties had complained that reopening the candidate nomination process only benefited the governing ANC that failed to register candidates in over 90 municipalities by the original cut-off date.
