The former Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba has set his eyes on becoming mayor again under the banner of his new political party.
He resigned from the Democratic Alliance and as leader of the city of Joburg in October last year and launched The People's Dialogue in December.
Mashaba announced on Tuesday that his initial platform to engage with South Africans from all walks of life will now be launched as a political party in August.
Mashaba told a press conference via his official Twitter account that they must still decide on a name for the party and that suggestions were welcome.
The party will contest the local Municipal elections for 2021 in Johannesburg, Ekhurhuleni and Tshwane.
The party is also willing to contest other municipalities if they have the funds to do so and if there is strong leadership.
At the moment, those who are interested in joining the party can sign up as a volunteer until there is a formal membership process in August.
In the coming months, representatives of the party will engage with volunteers in various Municipalities, including the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
Mashaba says representatives will not be chosen through a party-list system but will be elected by the voters who will hold them accountable.
Some of the key values of the party are to bring an end to corruption, reduce inequality, give people access to quality services and to not interfere with the economy in order to give the private sector the room it needs to flourish.
Crime and illegal immigration are also high on the agenda.
Mashaba says for next year's local government elections he will avail himself as mayoral candidate for Johannesburg.
The former leader of the Democratic Alliance Mmusi Maimane who also resigned from the DA in October is not involved in the new political party.
Mashaba said, however, that he would love to work with Maimane in the future.
