The Speaker of the Beyers Naude Municipality in the Eastern Cape has been elected following the toss of a coin.
The President of the Compatriots of South Africa (CSA), Cheslin Felix, was elected Speaker when the deadlock was broken by the coin toss conducted by a magistrate.
DA constituency leader, Samantha Graham-Mare', accused Compatriots of South Africa of betraying the wishes of its voters by siding with the ANC during Tuesday's election.
This was after CSA, the EFF and the DA entered into a coalition during last year's local government election, that ensured that the DA's Ewald Loock became the mayor, with the CSA's Lawton Hoffman becoming Speaker.
However, Hoffman was later expelled, and his position was filled by Felix who was elected the new Speaker.
The principal town in the municipal area is Graaff-Reinet and include Willowmore, Aberdeen, Jansenville, Steytlerville, Klipplaat and Nieu-Bethesda.
Meanwhile, flipping a coin to decide on a winning candidate in case of a tie in an election, is allowed in terms of the Municipal Structures Act.
This worked in the DA's favour during the re-election of Marlene van Staden as the mayor of a local municipality in Limpopo last December where a R1 coin was used.
