The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape will be laying criminal charges against a former councillor who allegedly offered bribes to DA councillors in the run-up to a recent Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting to elect a mayor.
According to a media report ahead of the meeting, former DA councillor Neville Higgins had allegedly tried to bribe some of his former colleagues to vote against Nqaba Bhanga, who was elected mayor.
The party's provincial chairperson, Andrew Whitfield, said he would be laying criminal charges against Higgins on Monday.
He said he will also call on the Hawks to probe the alleged role of Marlon Daniels, who is the Patriotic Alliance councillor and paroled former ANC councillor, Andile Lungisa, in this saga.
Whitfield said authorities must investigate all links to any other councillor or person as well as the source of where the funds, used to bribe officials, came from.
He says any attempt to bribe a public representative is illegal.
Charges will be laid against Mr Higgins, who has since joined the Patriotic Alliance, in terms of the Prevention of Corrupt Activities Act.
