Volkswagen Amarok

Since its launch in September 2010, Volkswagen Amarok Double Cab has modernised the South African light commercial vehicles (LCV) segment. To date, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have sold nearly 7 200 Amarok Double Cab units in South Africa.

Amarok Double Cab is one of the the most technically advanced bakkies in South Africa. Thanks to its highly advanced turbo charged direct injection TDI engines that set new standards when it comes to fuel economy and emissions. Amarok¹s active and passive safety systems as well as convenience features all match up to passenger car standards.

The front-end of the Amarok displays the Volkswagen Design DNA. The visual unit formed by the horizontal headlights and radiator grille with its louvers and decorative trim accents make the Amarok stands out on the road.

The horizontal lines in the well-defined interplay of body surfaces showcase high precision workmanship. Extending back from the vehicle¹s front end is a surface that develops over the fender contour to the side windows and encloses them in an arch. The cleanly sculpted curvatures of the bakkie¹s side body panels and engine hood give the Amarok the rugged look typical of a bakkie.

At the rear, the prominent VW logo on the tailgate catches the eye. The logo is framed by the bakkie¹s taillights with their distinctive Œnight¹ design. The high standards of the development team are expressed in details like this, which present the Amarok as a true Volkswagen and its top quality and high-class design sets it apart from the competition.

Stronger, refined and fuel-efficient TDI engines

Amarok Double Cab is now available with a refined, stronger and yet fuel efficient 2.0 BiTDI 132kW engine. The technologically advanced BiTDI engine features common rail direct injection with two-stage control bi-turbo. The maximum torque of 400 Newton-meter is still delivered at a low 1 500-2250rpm in spite of the extra 12kW power upgrade. This performance contrasts with a remarkably low combined fuel consumption of just 7.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (8.0 litres per 100 kilometres for 4MOTION). The 0-100 km/h acceleration is achieved in 10.3 seconds (10.6 seconds for 4x2) and it has top speed of 184 km/h (183 km/h for 4MOTION).

The second engine in the Amarok Double cab model range is another four cylinder TDI with maximum power of 90kW. Its technology includes a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The ³small² TDI develops an impressive torque of 340 Newton-meter from1750 rpm. It consumes just 7.7 l/100 km. The Amarok with the 90kW engine sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.5 seconds (13.7 seconds for 4MOTION). Its top speed is reached at 163 km/h (161 km/h for 4MOTION).

The 2.0 TSI with 118kW is the only petrol engine in the range. This turbo charged engine has maximum torque of 300 Newton-meter that is available between 1600-3750 rpm. It has combined fuel consumption of 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres. It only takes the 2.0 TSI 118kW Amarok 9.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to100 km/h. It has top speed of 180km/h.

The Amarok double cab comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

Dynamic and safe on any terrain

Amarok Double Cab customers have an option of two different driveline versions, namely switchable four-wheel drive (4MOTION) and rear-wheel drive (4x2). The latter version appeals to customers who are mainly interested in the Amarok¹s styling and versatility in a utility application. The all-wheel-drive version is right at home in all terrains.

The Amarok 4MOTION with switchable four-wheel drive is identified by a red ³4² in the badging. This is an ideal vehicle for off-road outings when the going gets tough, but is equally at home in an urban environment. It utilises a typical Œrigid¹ system for its four-wheel drive, a system that is practice-proven in the bakkie segment. When engaged at the press of a button it transfers power equally to both axles. For more difficult terrain a low ratio transfer case provides exceptional traction to make even the most severe off-road passages easy to master.

Even inclines with a slope angle of 45 degrees at full payload are no obstacle for the Amarok 4MOTION. An optional heavy duty spring package with three main and two auxiliary spring packs ensures a high overload safety factor and comfort in all load situations.

All Amarok Double Cab derivatives are fitted with an electronic differential lock that features automatic braking intervention. This system improves traction on all types of road surfaces.

Standard features

The Amarok Double Cab is available in two equipment lines Trendline and Highline.

Standard features in the Trendline include height adjustable front seats, foldable rear bench seat, lockable glove box and load bed lighting. The front bumper, door handles and mirror housings are painted in body colour. Lockable tailgate, window lifts, door locks and side-mirror adjusters are all electrically powered. In addition, RCD 210 with 4 speakers, semi-automatic climate control system (Climatic), multi-functional display, cruise-control system, 16-inch alloy wheels and front fog lights are all fitted as standard equipment.

The Amarok Highline offers a number of exclusive features. Building on the Trendline standard features, the Highline has upgrades such as part-chrome side mirror housings, various chrome accents outside and inside the vehicle and fender flares in body colour that create space for 17-inch alloy wheels.

In addition, the top equipment line is characterised by a colour contrasting instrument panel, an automatic climate control system (Climatronic) that offers exceptional comfort, RCD 310 with 6 speakers and classy fabric seat covers.

Interior and load width

The Amarok¹s exceptional interior dimensions make it one of the most spacious bakkies in its class. The vehicle¹s ergonomics are typical of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles; easy entry, a generous seating layout and lots of head room characterise the space behind the wheel. Ample leg room for the rear-bench seat makes the Amarok a full-fledged five-seater.

When only two persons are aboard, the rear seat can be folded to increase interior cargo space.

Important: Amarok Double Cab¹s load bed is 1 555 millimetres long and 1 620 millimetres wide. This results in an impressive load bed area of 2.52 square meters. And that¹s not all, it also has a maximum load width of 1 222 mm between wheel wells. This makes it possible to load Euro pallets (1.2 x 0.8 m) sideways.

The Amarok makes it is easy to transport sports equipment like quad bikes or bulky items such as machinery. Thanks to its load sill height of 780 millimetres and payload capacity of up to 1.15 metric tons. Four tie-down eyes at the corners of the load-bed secure cargo while on the move. When pulling a trailer the bakkie can handle up to 2.8 metric tons of suitably braked trailer load.

Safety

The safety package of the Amarok sets new standards in its class. Along with driver and front passenger airbags there are also head/thorax airbags, still rare in this segment. Also included, of course, are height-adjustable head restraints and three-point safety belts at all seating positions.

In front, the belts have belt pre-tensioners and on the driver¹s side a visual and acoustic belt warning system.

Numerous other features guarantee a high level of active safety. These include the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) which is standard in the Highline models. On all versions with trailer preparation, ESP functionality includes a trailer stabilisation system.

Another feature contributing to safety is ³Off-Road Mode² activated by the press of a button which is enabled up to a vehicle speed of 100 km/h. In this mode, the ESP system, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS) are all tuned for challenging off-road conditions.

The ABS system can reduce braking distance both off-road and on gravel road surfaces, often significantly depending on the road composition. When ³Off-Road Mode² is activated while the bakkie is driven at less than 30 km/h, Hill Descent Assist is also activated; it holds driving speed constant on steep descents by means of targeted brake actuations. For the first time in this class, when Hill Descent Assist is activated, the driver can individually adapt the vehicle¹s speed to a particular driving situation by accelerating or braking. On vehicles without ESP, ³Off-Road Mode² comprises ASR and Off-Road ABS systems that are standard equipment here.

Colours

Amarok Double Cab is offered in eight exterior colours. The selection begins with the uni-colours Candy White and Ontario Green. For a classier look, customers can choose metallic or pearl effect colours such as Sand Beige Metallic, Reflex Silver Metallic, Natural Grey Metallic, Starlight Blue Metallic and Mendoza Brown Metallic as well as Deep Black Pearl Effect. All colours match perfectly with the Anthracite interior trim.

Seat upholstery

The Amarok Trendline is outfitted with upholstery in ³Trail² look with Anthracite fabric colour. The ³Endless² pattern adorns the seat covers of the Highline equipment line and it is available in Anthracite Grey.

Offering even more refined seating comfort is the optional ³Vienna² leather package, which is available in Anthracite on both Trendline and Highline derivatives.
